J3 Series Electric Actuators

Q1 - Is the full J3 range avaialble ?
A1 - No. We are introducing the J3 in 2 stages, the smaller models (20 through 85) are available from February 2008, the larger models (140 + 300) will be available at the end of 2008. ?
A2 - The LED light gives a continuous indication of the J3 actuator's operational status - a solid light advises the actuator is fully functional, a flashing light indicates a problem, and the sequence of the flashes advises the nature of the problem. The main 2 indications are a failure to respond to a signal due to the valve being jammed and therefore the actuator's torque limiter has activated, or that the actuator is in MANUAL mode.

Q3 - If the torque limiter is activating, can I reverse the signal to try and use the flowing media to clear the bockage ?
A3 - Yes you can. This new functionality in the J3 (compared to the J2) can potentially prevent costly shut-downs to clear the blockage, if the jam can be cleared using the flowing media.

Q4 - Are the working times the same for like for like models compared to the J2 ?
A4 - The J3 Model 20 works in around 11 seconds, compared to around 8.5 seconds for the J2-20. The Model J3 Model 55 takes 17 seconds compared to the J2 Model 55 at around 10 seconds.

Q5 - The on-off function can be changed to failsafe using a plug & play kit - is this in a separate housing like the J2 ?
A5 -No. Due to advances in battery technology, we can now operate the actuators using more powerful yet much smaller batteries than in the past - we can therefore fit the new battery and circuit board in the same housing as the actuator, making the J3 failsafe actuator much lighter and more compact compared to its J2 predecessor.

Q6 - The modulating units in the J2 were factory set. Is this the same with the J3?
A6 - No, the J3 plug and play modulating conversion kit contains all you need including a self calibrating digital positioner card that allows you to select 4-20mA or 0-10V control when you install it.

Q7 - I want you to supply a failsafe and modulating assembly but you show a boxed kit on your final selection page. Do you supply ready assembled failsagfe/ modulating, or do I have to fit the kit ?

A7 - We can supply in either form, installed or as separate components. If you ask us to supply with the failsafe or modulating kit installed and tested we will be delighted to do that for you.

Q8 - Who are the failsafe & modulating kits aimed at ?

A8- Both users and stocking distributors. Users can change the functionality by installing a retro-fit kit, or distributors can dramatcally improve the flexibility of their stock of J+J electric actuators - and the service they offer !

The J+J plastic gear myth . . . . . . . .

Llike many manufacturers, we use a plastic gear as the first  gear in the train. This is a speed reducing gear connected to the motor that carries no load and plastic is used purely to reduce noise.  Contrary to the myth, we have never suffered a failure of this plastic gear.

J2 Electric Actuators

Q1 - The J2 is being superseded by the new J3, will the J2 still be available?
A1 - Yes -until the current stock of components runs out!

Q2 - Is the technical information on the J2 actuators and assemblies still available?
A2 - Yes, inthe Download Centre in the Technical Centre in the right hand navigation bar.

CH-air Pneumatic Actuators

Q1 - Why do you have 3 versions, CH-A, CH-B and CH-C types?
A1 - We have a large and loyal customer base for our original high quality CH-A type actuator that appreciate it's durability and reliability. However, the market is pressurising for lower prices and we have therefore recently introduced 2 versions from a quality manufacturer in China to enable us to offer competitive prices when required.

Q2 - Are the CH-air actuators approved for use in explosive atmospheres?
A2 - Yes, all 3 ranges are ATEX approved & CE marked

Q3 - Is the stainless version of the CH-A type all stainless?
A3 - Our standard stocks have aluminium pistons to assist in weight and cost reduction. Stainless pistons are available as a factory order option. Torque outputs rise dramatically when stainless pistons are fitted as the working pressure (supply air) increases to a maximum of 15 bar compared to 8 bar with the aluminium pistons.

Limit Switchboxes

Q1 - Do you offer ATEX approved boxes?
A1 - Yes, we offer our own J+J manufactured ATEX II 2GD EExia (Zone 0) boxes in plastic IP65, or aluminium IP67 boxes. For Zone 1 applications we offer a fully approved J+J branded box manufactured in South Africa.

Q2 - Can you 'brand' or 'badge' your boxes?
A2 - Yes, we offer a graphic design service to apply client's logos to our own J+J manufactured boxes. This is a very popular service for customers with higher volumes.
